I finally purchased a permit for Weyerhaeuser land. There are several places to go that are locked and the permit gives me a key and access. It is only good for me and my family but I will report on how the areas are. The permit starts in Aug and is good for one year. I look forward to exploring some areas I have not been. My first stop is the gate on the middle fork of the nooksack river. Looks like a good area to explore but it is gated.
Will update.
This is the first year in last 4 that I haven't purchased a vehicle pass for Snoqualmie Tree Farm (Hancock outside of North Bend). Outside of modern firearm deer hunting season it was always quiet with 100+ miles of roads to explore. You can get up high and find boatable mountain lakes, or access otherwise hard-to-reach alpine lakes. There's also tons of lower land lakes with good fishing and bucketfuls of mushrooms. $250 is a hard pill to swallow and the main reason why I'm forgoing the pass this year to give myself more time to explore other cheaper areas, but the easy access is _very_ tempting for those living on Seattle eastside.
I figured for $250 it is worth the chance. It was tough to read "no motorcycle" even street legal as that is my first desire to ride but truck camping knowing I am probably the only one around is pretty cool. I have also looked into leasing a chunk of land and forming a club for access. Seems like a pretty inexpensive way to secure an area. If you get the right amount of "members" the cost can be low.
I've looked into access to the Hancock lands outside of North Bend, but the ludicrous cost and draconian restrictions really pushed me away. Will be interested to see if you find it worthwhile. Looking forward to hearing more about how it goes.
