Coldwater to E. Harrison this Spring

I’m testing the waters to gauge the interest in a springtime trip to the Thompson-Nicola and Nahatlach areas in BC.   In past years, getting over Kookipi Cr FSR has been a no go in late April, so I’m thinking May 11-13 this year.   I know that’s Mother’s day – but the following weekend is the 1st Canadian long weekend of the season and the place will be crawling with the devils.  We could try May 4-6 , but it could be a bit snowy yet.   The area between highways 5 and 1 has a lot to offer in power line roads, plus we could check the access to the “mini-whipsaw” – though it probably won’t be accessible until August.  I wouldn’t mind making a two night trip of it, but I wouldn’t likely make the border before 6pm that Friday.    I’ll be up in BC in March and April so I will likely do a bit of scouting at the lower elevations just to see whats changed since 2016.   Here’s the core route:

Sadly, I can't make this trip. Not this year. Looks great though!

That is too bad Guy - it would be fun to go on an adventure up there together. I am leaning more toward the first weekend in May for this one. I'll try to get a few more BC trips worked in this year. The Hunters Ridge trail is one I'm keen on if I can get the time in Aug/Sept. It goes up to 7000 ft, so you can only really run it for 2 months out of the year.

Bryan! Let’s put this on the calendar... we added the event submission form on the Adventure page. We’d love it if you’d let us push it out to the world. Once it’s set up you can share it on social media as well! Thanks for all you do!

It has now been submitted as an event - 5/4/2018 to 5/6/2018. More planning to come in this thread.

Bryan - I have to admit that this cracked me up: "1st Canadian long weekend of the season and the place will be crawling with the devils"

I'm in...this is my first trip, so really excited. So is the meetup in Sumas the evening of the 4th at 6pm and then we'll head up that evening and camp closer to the trail?

Mar 23, 2018

Hi Nathan - we will find a camp spot up between Hwy 1 and Hwy 5 after we cross the border. It's about 2 hrs up Hwy 5 (Coquihalla) to where we'll start out - so we'll try to get to a spot to camp before dark. We normally just do "distributed" camping, meaning pull off where there's a nice looking camp spot and set up for the night. We'll likely make it up one of the FSRs a ways Friday night, so a campsite will avail itself. I'm going to check one of my old spots off Hwy 1 in mid April to see if it's still campable just to be on the safe side as well.

Looking forward to seeing you on the trip!

I'm interested in going.

Cool Hannah! It'll be awesome to have you along.

Mar 31, 2018

Is there much snow wheeling? Just wondering if my stick 4Runner will be okay.

Mar 31, 2018

Your 4Runner will be fine. There may be some patches of snow, but if too deep or too long we'll find another route.

Apr 21, 2018

Looks like I'm going to have to bow out of the trip. Some family stuff going on and I might not be in town.

Apr 21, 2018

Thanks Hannah - we'll catch you on another trip for sure.

Hi all,

For the first night we're going to head for Murray Lake 49°48'07.9"N 121°00'18.7"W

It doesn't look like the snow will have cleared enough for us to get over the Kookipi FSR to E. Harrison, so we'll spend more time exploring the area between Hwy 1 and Hwy 5. I'll check in with more info as the trip nears.

A couple of updates for the May 4-6 BC adventure trip. One attendee has dropped off so there is room if someone would like to go. Just reach out to me here and I'll get it set up.

The snow is hanging in above 2500 ft pretty late this year. We may need to alter our destinations a bit to avoid deep snow. I am pretty sure we won't be able to drive from Boston Bar to Harrison lake at this point, so we'll spend more time investigating between Hwy 1 and Hwy 5. Here's the main routes we'll try to take spurs from to get some views and over-landing joy:

Remember that going to Canada takes a passport or "enhanced" driver's license. Also, items for personal defense are restricted at the border. (I also learned that transporting citrus causes an international incident - the hard way :)

Let me know if you have any questions and be sure to join the conference calls this week if you can (see previous post).

Thanks -.b

Hi Bryan,

I missed yesterdays call and I can't make Wednesday, we spoke on the phone already last week; let me know if there is anything important I missed. I can give you a call this week also if needed.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I'm really looking forward to the trip this weekend! I haven't heard from a few folks that signed up for the trip so I just want to re-iterate that we will be meeting at 6 pm Friday 5/4 @ the Chevron in Sumas. From there we'll head north to our Friday night campsite (about 2 hrs).

I know that there is at least one more space available if someone wants to come along. Respond here or hit me at bryan.hoult@gmail.com if you would like to go or have questions.

  • Although I don't get the day off for Veterans day, school is out and my rule is when my kid has a day off, I take a day off. I'm thinking of doing another day of off-roading with that time. Last time, I went to Tahuya and had the entire park to myself; it was fabulous. I think I might do that again, but I'm also open to other destinations. I only have the 1 day to spend, I don't want to drive more than a couple of hours (from the Kirkland area), and I probably want to stay out of the higher altitudes to avoid snow/ice. Is anyone else interested in a day trip for off-roading?
  • Okay guys. It's that time of year again. Time to deforest the wilderness in the name of holiday cheer! The NWOL Christmas tree runs are live! We'll be doing two as usual. A Saturday and a Sunday run. Register here: Saturday: https://www.northwestoverland.com/events-1/christmas-tree-run-saturday Sunday: https://www.northwestoverland.com/events-1/christmas-tree-run-sunday Winter is coming in hot (cold?) this year. Make sure your vehicle is ready. Solid front and rear recovery points are mandatory for this run. Shovels are a great idea. Garden hoes are a great idea. Tire chains may be useful as well. There have been times where the decent is super icy. Also make sure YOU are ready. Dress well for the cold. Have enough gear to spend the night. Not plan A of course but things happen. Please bring a little bit of firewood as we'll be having a fire at the top so you can warm up while finding the perfect tree. We will be camping at Ranger Creek for the weekend if anyone would like to join us there. Bring lots of wood in that case... It'll be cold! This is one of our most fun annual events. Please don't take this post as trying to scare anyone away. It's just my usual winter preparedness speech. Always better to be over prepared than under. See you there!
  • So I am accompanying my son to Ellensburg this friday and Sat. to visit a college friend of his. I am however not going to hang out with them so I'm thinking of just heading into either the Wenas Wildlife area or the LT Murray area on Saturday just to putz around. Not camping but staying friday night in a hotel in Ellensburg. If anyone wants to hang out, I'm open.
