In OVERLAND DESTINATIONS
I have a week off second week in August and I've been assigned to plan a road trip. Since it will be too hot for us to do something like Utah, I'm thinking Canada or maybe Idaho or northern Montana with detour into Canada from there. I've been flying between Seattle and Calgary and there seems to be some really interesting stuff to explore down there (think South of Banff), but there doesn't seem to be a lot of roads to the interesting areas. I researched Vancouver Island, but I read somewhere that there are a lot of closed gates to run into while exploring up there. I'd like to get somewhere that is technically a little challenging (more than logging roads- something that weeds out "normal" people), but not so bad that I don't want to go without another vehicle (I'm triple locked on 34s with a winch). We would like to find good views (alpine or sub-alpine, perhaps) , campsites near a stream or other water, places where there aren't other people, and something that registers on the "epic trip" meter. Any ideas or suggestions?
