About the event
NWOL backcountry chili cook-off is on! Since it takes place in the backcountry, there are some specific guidelines and considerations to keep in mind. Here's a set of guidelines tailored for a backcountry chili cook-off:
**1. Ingredients:
- All ingredients must be suitable for backcountry cooking and adhere to Leave No Trace principles.
No pre-cooked or partially prepared ingredients/chili is allowed. All cooking must be done on-site.
**2. Cooking Equipment:
- Participants must use portable backcountry cooking equipment, such as camp stoves or lightweight backpacking stoves. Open fires will not be practical in all backcountry locations.
**3. Campsite Etiquette:
- Participants must adhere to the Leave No Trace principles. This includes proper waste disposal, minimal impact on the environment, and respecting the natural surroundings.
Please be respectful of other participants and their belongings.
**4. Safety:
- Participants should prioritize safety in the backcountry. This includes proper food handling to prevent foodborne illnesses, using cooking equipment safely, and being aware of the surroundings.
**5. Judging Criteria:
- Consider criteria such as taste, creativity, and adaptability to backcountry cooking conditions.
Judges might also evaluate how well participants adhere to backcountry ethics and safety guidelines.
**6. Team Size:
- Two people per team. Keep in mind the practicality of cooking in the backcountry with limited equipment.
**7. Registration:
- Please register on our website in advance so that we can get a headcount. Deadline for entry is 04/10/24.
**8. Dish Presentation:
- Participants should be creative in presenting their chili. Go all out! Keep in mind the need for minimal waste and environmental impact, we pack out what we pack in.
**9. Leave No Trace:
- Emphasize the importance of leaving the backcountry as pristine as it was found. Participants should clean up thoroughly, dispose of waste responsibly, and avoid damaging the natural environment.
