One of our favorite areas of the PNW to explore is the Oregon Outback. Centered between Christmas Valley and Bend, The Oregon Outback provides ample opportunities to explore remote and curious geological features in the surrounding areas.

About the event

Imagine stepping into the Oregon Outback, some 10,000 years ago. What is high desert now, was a prehistoric lake; Teeming volcanos and blow outs. Underground lava tubes, with hot golden magma flowing beneath you. Palm trees and animals and mammals only seen in the arid or tropic climates we know of today. Obsidian flows and undulating sand dunes.

Our journey will start at the Overland Expo PNW - Deschutes County Fair & Expo Canter

We will depart around noon from the DCFEC and head towards Fort Rock. A Tuft Ring 10,000 years ago, now a geological monument in the O. O. (Oregon Outback). We will camp at Cabin Lake Campground, just North of Fort Rock.

We will then make camp and have the option of hitting Derrick Cave, Crack in the ground and a few other geological points of interest in the area. When our geology lesson is over, then…
