2020/2021 was a crazy time in my life. Kidney cancer was the dominate issue. After my surgery my wife and I bought a 2005 Chevy Express 2500 Quigley conversion van as a project for my recovery. It is a 6.0 155 inch wheel base cargo van. It came with propane heater, house battery with led lights, and 12v fridge. Basic bed configuration. My goal has been to go through the van and get all mechanics in top notch shape then start on my touches.
PIcture above was after new tires and awning added. I also added bilstein shocks, new jounce bumpers, complete rear brake job (ugh), new master cylinder, winshield wash bottle and srs sensor.
Above picture shows my solution to some storage over the 12v fridge. I found a $30 desk that once I looked at it I knew it would fit with little trimming. I cut the legs down and it fit perfect. Lots of storage for $30 and a little bit of time.
The van already had the masonite sheets with insulation installed so that saved me a bunch of time. I remounted the inverter so it was more accesible. I have since added different drawer pulls. I got the desk and drawer pulls from the RE store in Bellingham.
The picture above shows the new knobs on the desk. The jump seat came with the van and it fits perfectly between the bed and desk. Have mounted it in place and the back folds down for additional flat area. It is actually quite comfortable to sit in.
The pictures above show how next I wanted to make a usable center console for "stuff". I found two wood boxes with tops that come off on marketplace for $15. Cut one down a few inches and sanded it. Made the top slide forward for useable area while driving or sitting. Also allows access to stuff inside. Used simple hook latch to attach the lid when pulled forward to it does not fall off. Works pretty darn well. The cutouts on the back side allow the hooks to slide into the cutouts when closed.
The above two photos shows my solution to the rear door panels. They were ugly and I wanted to have some fun. I went to a thrift store and bought some albums ( 20 cents a piece I think) and used the covers to make some fun door panels. My wife is still not sure about this and has "put a hold' on the entire interior done in album covers.
I had a custom bug screen made for the side doors. Local seamstress in Bellingham. Does incredible work. I can now have the doors open during good weather and keeps bugs to a minimum.
Done and few more things as well. Will update as I go along. Upgrading my house battery is my next project. Possibly solar option but we will see. Good to be back.
This van has been a beast in the snow we have had. Went up Middle Fork road off Mosquito lake rd with some buddies on new years day. It chewed through nearly 2 ft of snow. Did great.
Really like this project, especially the common-sense upgrades.
Wow, that's lot work effort put into this project! So happy to hear you are on the mend! Sounds like you are ready to get livin'! Thanks for sharing this project and your story. It really inspires a lot of people to do the same.
