Mr. T is the most current in number of builds for me (1993 Toyota T100). My previous build was a 1977, short box Chevrolet Van with a built 400 small block. The interior was varnished birch, simple and stoic. I abandoned it as an overlander when I couldn't get more than 5mpg... ouch! Other vehicles (builds) of note include:
1951 Studebaker/Packard 6X6
1967 VW Westphalia (originally from Panama)
1968 Land Cruiser (289ci Chevy engine)
1968 Renault 4 (small but effective)
1969 Land Rover (top speed 45mph)
1971 VW Westphalia (extremely reliable)
1974 Land Cruiser (best rig ever)
1984 VW Westphalia
1986 VW Adventure Wagon
1987 VW Westphalia Syncro (extremely unreliable)
Any photos of the 1968 Land Cruiser (Chev-ota?) or 1974 Cruiser?
I will do a build video soon.
Just finished my overlanding trailer. It took 3 months to build, but turned out nice!
Nice T100!!
Just for fun... this Renault 4 was probably my first overland vehicle. In 1976, I explored Europe, wandering without map nor preconceived direction. The six month trip rolled up over 20,000km and more then 20 countries. This photo was taken somewhere in East Germany, west of Berlin. I wasn't supposed to deviate from the autobahn between Hanover and Berlin and ended up playing a game of cat-and-mouse with the East German Army. I was too young to understand how dangerous it was.
Before the Chevy van, I built up a VW Syncro. Unfortunately, it wasn't dependable so after about 20,000mi, it was replaced.
It has a quarter of a million miles on it and is still going strong, and with its original running gear! Last year, I drove it to Florida, up to NC and then back home on every back road I could find.
Soo...beautiful.....
Love that Chevy van. Got any pictures of your T? Always liked those trucks.
