I’m looking for an app (iPhone) that I can import GPS tracks and then try to follow. My idea is I would pick some likely roads/trails, plot out a path in google earth or some other program, and then be able to load the track into my iphone and then be able to try to follow it.
I also have a surface, but do not have a way to input my gps location into it at the moment.
Any recomendations?
GEEEEE! Now I feel like a total moron. With all this tech talk and use of tearms I've never even heard of, has this old fart totally confused. Where doe's one go to learn about all this new fangled jargon? Does a basic GPS and paper maps still work, Or do I need to go back to childhood and just start over? LOL I made a post in another area of this forum about looking for a basic type of unit. What I need is somethng a basic oldster like me can learn to use to help us get home when we get lost!
Wanted to update that I used the Gaia app while out exploring today. I really like it; it’s intuitive to use and has just the right amount of detail to quickly reference as I’m driving around. Now I need to just play with making tracks/routes/waypoints and get better and building my trips.
Thanks, I found Gaia while perusing the App Store, I’ll give it a try but while messing with it it seems to work well. I also got GPX Pro which I’ll try but I don’t like it as much at this point.
I have been making my own tracks or routes in google earth, and then converting the KML files to GPX files. I also pulled GPX files for the IDBDR and was able to use Google Earth to split out only the section I wanted. There is probably a better way to edit the GPX files without having to convert back and forth to KML in Google Earth but this works for the moment.
I use Gaia on iOS.
You can create your own route that you want to follow, or download someone else's track (which you can change to a route if you want to).
I've had people share waypoints, tracks and routes via FB, text and email and they all open in Gaia.
I've also found tracks/routes on websites and have been able to download them and save them into my Gaia account.
I'm sure other software can do the same thing, but I've really like Gaia. You can add photos to waypoints, tracks and routes. You can include your own written description of waypoints, tracks and routes and include URLs into that description for copy and paste later. They don't have hyperlinks yet.
It syncs well across all devices to. I usually work on my project on my Mac with my iPad next to me and they sync well. There can be some slowdowns for some reason at times, but overall it works really well.
Gaia is pretty popular with the iOS crowd. Also Backcountry Navigator. I use Orux but I don't know if there's an iOS version.
