I hate full tool boxes; I've moved to wrench and tool rolls. But, sockets and smaller tools were a pain. I've yet to find anything that will hold sockets on during the vibrations of off road.
Now I use bank bags. I mark them with a Sharpie so I know what's inside. It also makes it easy to get just the only tools or that i need; I can grab the metric 1/4" drive and a wrench roll if that's all I want. Simple idea that I wish I would've thought about earlier...
I used to use tool boxes, but found lugging a 100lb box a huge pain! I went on the hunt and got some tool bags ( craftsman, ace hrdwr etc sell them. Dont get harbor frt) I like them, bigger size for 1/2 in drive, big hammers etc, small size for open ends, 3/8 set etc. Only thing I have trouble with is sockets keep falling off the socket racks but I think I'm going to try Aarons idea and use 550 cord. Far quieter and way easier to handle. I even use one for keeping all my cam straps and ratchet straps in.
I use these rails from Lowes. You can cut them if you really want to save space. They hold the sockets (3/8” and 1/4”) securely and keep them organized. Just store them in a pouch with the other tools.
I string all my sockets on a length of 550 cord so that they stay in order.
