I put this here for lack of a better place, and if there is a better place, MODS, please feel free to move it! Does anyone have any experience or ideas on building a RTT? We have talked about building one to fit our trailer. The trailer is 4X6 long. The design I have been playing with is a basic hoop shape. Sorry, I'm not smart enough to do a tech sketch on here yet. It would be 6X8 when opened up, door would be over tailgate for ease of getting in and out of tent. Would have a wooden base and frame to attach tent to. We want it to be big enough to fit full size queen air mattress in. Possibly even have an awning out over tailgate with potential to put drop down sides for privacy when people around. The "hoop" shape would go the 8 ft length and straight sides the 6 ft width. I have pondered over using fiberglass tent poles as well as using PVC pipe for tent poles. Inside should be about 4-5 ft tall. N floor, as it would attach on the outside of the folding framework so it will stay dry inside. A simple D shaped door with zippered vents on both sides. Any input would be greatly helpful. I have about 20 yds of a heavy ripstop nylon fabric in Marpat camo. I think I have all the wood working, welding and sewing equipment I need,I think! lol. The trailer will be set up to have a kitchen along one side for stove, prep, dishes etc. I will be building a fully articulated hitch coupler eventually as well.

Ive done some more thinking on this and may change directions completely. New idea would be more like a hard top RTT, but of rigid construction. With siding like a travel trailer and fixed windows like a trailer too. Would be big enough for a queen mattress and about 4 ft inside height, My trailer is 4 ft wide and 6 ft long, with 8 inch sides that have stake pockets. New "camper top" would attach using stake pockets. It would have an awning with drop down sides for a dressing room. One important advantage for us, is it can be insulated with rigid foam board for when the weather is on the cooler side. Either on back end of trailer over tailgate or on side opposite camper door, would be a kitchen area with awning over it too. All painted to match green XJ! lol. Would be fast and easy to deploy as no set up required, VERY important to us old farts! lol
One thing I want to build is this fully articulated hitch coupler I found online.

Though it's heavy, sunbrella is easier to work with than rip-stop. Since the tent will be on a trailer maybe the weight wouldn't be an issue. For wind and water resistance it can't be beat.
Probably a next winter project. Just trying to get some ideas and advice from those that have done it. I dont tend to just into a project I'm not familiar with process. If it was a metals project, Id dive right in. Been doing metal work as a profession for almost 50 years!
Wow that's ambitious. Take lots of pictures!
