In ACTIVITY/TRIP PLANNING
A friend (or 2) and I are looking to make a day trip on August 17th or 18th somewhere in the Wenatchee area. I was thinking maybe Douglas Creek but I've never been and I'm not sure I really know where to go. Does anyone want to join us and maybe guide us to some cool areas? Or does anyone have a recommendation for a road to start on that we can then just go explore or a destination to try to get to? The least capable rig is probably my stock 4x4 Expedition (good tires, no locker, don't care about the body); It made it fine up to Gallagher Head lake.

In WRENCHING - HOW TO
Has anyone done their own differential work? How hard is it to not screw up? I have a '99 Expedition with a Ford 8.8 inch differential, 3.55 ratio and an LSD. I'm thinking after 260k miles the LSD is toast, and we are thinking about using it to tow our travel trailer too. I'd like to re-gear to at least 3.73 if not 4.10, and put an E-locker in it (maybe an air locker). Anyone able to offer some advice? Recommendations on a Seattle area shop?

I have 2 sets of Les Schwab tire chains. I believe they are manufactured by Laclede, Alpine Sport model, size 2324. Link: http://lacledechain.com/product/alpine-sport-truck-suv-chains/ These should fit a Tacoma or 4Runner size vehicle. They are used, a little rusty, but appear undamaged. They are the split style that go on easily, even if you can’t move the vehicle because it is stuck. I am located in Carnation and don’t get out to many NWOL events, so getting them to you may be a challenge if you don’t live in North King County. I was thinking $25 each, or $40 for both sets.

I designed and built a custom light controller for my truck. My goal and reason for not just buying a commercially available device was adding some specific functionality. I wanted a controller that had 3 inputs: 1) A SPST switch controls each output 2) Two 12V nominal inputs that enables the output (output 1 & 2 connected, 3 by itself) The two 12V inputs can come from a vehicle system (high beams for example), or from a SPST switch. They are protected by diodes so they do not ‘back feed’ each other. In application I have one of the inputs from my high beam, and the other from an override switch in the cab. My outputs go to lights. To build myself the one circuit card I needed, I had to buy 3 versions of the circuit card. I am looking to sell the remaining 2 of the cards to help fund other projects. I can populate the electrical components, or I can give you the part numbers for everything and let you source and install them. I have been running my card in my truck for a couple months and I am convinced that it is working well and how I wanted, no issues. You will need to provide an enclosure, and a way to mount the board (a strategically cut piece of wood or plastic will do, or 3D printer). Bare circuit card: $20 Assembled circuit card: $65 Features: · 3 output circuits · Fuse protected distribution built in (one input +12V line) · Max 30A per output, total not to exceed 80A. · Low current draw on trigger inputs (to reduce load on vehicle system or triggering overcurrent faults) · Standard automotive relays handle "high" current, easily replaced Input/outputs: J1 – Bulk +12V input, feeds fuses F1, F2, and F3 (80A max, sum of output currents) J2-1 – Trigger A for output 1 and 2 (~1 mA) J2-2 – Trigger B for output 1 and 2 (~1 mA) J2-3 – Switch for output 1 (~0.2 A) J2-4 – Switch for output 2 (~0.2 A) J2-5 – Switch for output 3 (~0.2 A) J2-6 – Trigger A for output 3 (~0.5 mA) J2-7 – Trigger B for output 3 (~0.5 mA) J2-8 – Ground (~6 A) J3-1 – Output 1 (30 A Max) J3-2 – Output 2 (30 A Max) J3-GND – Ground (common to J2-8) J3-3 – Output 3 (30 A Max) My Instalation: I have it connected to 2 sets of forward lights, and one set of rear lights. Input J2-1 is connected to the high beam +12V from the truck. Input J2-2 is connected to an “override” SPST switch in the cab. This switch turns on various outputs such as my HAM radio and now my lights. J2-3 is connected to another switch in my cab, this switch only controls output 1 (one of the forward lights). J2-4 controls output 2 (2nd set of lights), and J2-5 controls output 3 (rear lights). J2-6 connects to the reverse +12V circuit, and J2-7 is connected to the same override switch as J2-2. With this setup, I can select which of the two forward lights I want on, and then turn them on and off with the high beams. Similarly, I can select if I want the reverse lights on, and then they will come on with the truck in reverse. Optionally, at any time I can turn on the override switch, and the outputs that are switched on will turn on. I have this all wired up into a box mounted on top of my engine compartment fuse box. In the past I have accomplished this same thing with fuse blocks, relay blocks, and a rats nest of wiring. This implementation is much cleaner and well organized with the added low current triggers.

Today I got a winch; the last time I had one it was permanently mounted in my front bumper, but it would have helped me out more if I could have had it in the back. So this time around I plan on mounting it to a cradle. This is also a daily driver, so I figure I don’t need to lug it around 24/7. Question 1: Where to mount the control box.  I’ll probably mount it over the center of the spool, but I was considering mounting it in the engine bay. The biggest problem I see with that, is that there are 3 large wires and one smaller one going to the motor (I am kinda confused as to why 4 wires are needed). I don’t think I have seen any quick connects with 3 or 4 terminals, and that would mean 50% more wire to run 20’ to the rear of the truck. Probably simplest to just keep it with the winch. Anyone have a good reason to remotely mount the control box that makes it worth the effort/cost? Question 2: Remote control... it comes with a wired/wireless remote control, but I’m also considering that I could wire a switch inside the cabin. For a cradle mounted winch, is it worth the effort to  wire a switch? I’m thinking not, but I’d welcome opinions. I have a few more supplies to get (quick connects, wire, etc.) before I can get it setup, but I’m excited.

In GOT TO HAVE IT GEAR
I’m looking for an app (iPhone) that I can import GPS tracks and then try to follow. My idea is I would pick some likely roads/trails, plot out a path in google earth or some other program, and then be able to load the track into my iphone and then be able to try to follow it. I also have a surface, but do not have a way to input my gps location into it at the moment. Any recomendations?

In OVERLAND DESTINATIONS
In a couple weeks I will be spending a week north of Couer d'Alene for a family vacation and I'm hoping to take a day to go explore in the Couer d'Alene National Forest. Does anyone know of anything cool in that area I should try to check out? I'm thinking of trying to find some fire lookouts but I haven't looked into them yet to see if there is anything there.

In GOT TO HAVE IT GEAR
(Pun intended) I’m starting to look at getting a new set of tires for my truck. I’m pretty sold on the BFG KO2s, but brand/model is not exactly what I would like help with; there are a lot of options for load ratings, speed ratings, section widths, and aspect ratios. For reference, these will be going on an F-150 and my stock tires are 265/70R17. I’m considering stepping up the overall diameter a little bit, but I’m having trouble determining what section width I should go for; should I look for a wider tire, similar, or narrower? I have a feeling one direction would be better than another for the general PNW area. I also have the option to step up to an LT tire. This will give me thicker sidewalls (more protection?), but a harsher ride normally and less flex when aired down. Any thoughts? I think there are similar trade offs for the load range. I can go higher for what I presume is better durability, but then the tire is heavier and less conforming to the terrain. I’d appreciate any wisdom anyone with some more experience in this area has to share, I’m used to 2wd and not considering off road conditions when selecting tires.

In OVERLAND DESTINATIONS
Is there a database of NW overland destinations that anyone knows about? I’m thinking something that can be referenced when someone is looking for something new to experience. If not, I’m willing try to get something together, I can post a KML file that people can open in Google Earth. I’d like to use the “Mitchell Scale” https://trackandtrailpublications.com/the-mitchell-scale/ as it seems to me to break out the difficulty well in meaningful ways. If you know of good destinations (views, lakes, dispersed campsites, fire lookouts, etc.) please share the location, what is there, and your evaluation of the trail to get there. If there is interest, I can try to get a form setup to submit the details and host a link to keep the file updated.
